The fishermen of rusinga have known lake victoria and her fish to be their source of livelihood. Some have been fishermen from their early teens to grown adults. They say they have been able to take care of themselves and their family from this fishing activities. Their routine is that they go for fish in the evening and spend the entire night in the lake, they catch the small fish known as omena and the larger ones. business is done in the morning, their are middle men like mzee issa and women mostly deal in omena, a full basin of omena goes for 2000 shillings, their market is both local and beyond. In the mornings they can be seen scrambling for omena, it surely is first come first served unless you are married to a fisherman or you are closest of friends.
